Welcome to my very first blog post! In Swahili, the word “Safari” means “journey”, and so I’m excited to introduce myself and take you on a Safari through this blog. Hopefully, through these words and stories, I’ll help you experience some of the incredible adventures that I’ve been lucky enough to have whilst on safari.
My name is Morgan, a good Welsh name. But I grew up in East Africa, splitting my childhood between Kenya and Tanzania, and my fondest memories come from the wild places there. Some of my earliest recollections are from safari truck, watching elephants cross the road or listening to lions roar in the distance whilst curled up in my tent. Safaris weren’t just holidays for me — they were part of life, part of growing up. The friends I made on those dusty tracks and starry nights are still some of my closest today.
Over the years, I’ve lived a lifetime of safari adventures — through every climate East Africa has to offer. I’ve summited Mount Kilimanjaro, and I’ve sipped ice-cold beer while watching the sun set over the Serengeti. I’ve been chased by buffalo (don’t recommend), bitten by a monkey (definitely don’t recommend), and once slept next to a cheetah — though I really wouldn’t recommend that either. I woke up covered in fleas. Despite all that I’ve done, it is never enough and there is still have so much that I want to experience.
These days, I live in the UK. I’ve completed a PhD, found the love of my life, and am now following my dream of building robots in Space. Yet no matter where life has taken me, there’s always been a little piece of me that dreams of home; for the freedom in the bush, the crackle of the campfire, and the smell of rain on red dust.
Whenever I’ve had the chance to bring friends back to Kenya, it’s thrills me to watch them fall in love with the wilderness the way that I have. Their wonder, their laughter, their memories; it’s those moments that inspired me to start this blog.
Through these posts, I want to help you experience the magic of safari too. To taste the freedom that only the African wilderness can offer. This blog is my outlet for the stories, the places, the smells and sounds I miss every day. It’s a guide to help you plan your journey with advice, practical tips, and a few hard-earned lessons to make sure your experience is not just unforgettable, but safe and rewarding.
The safaris I love most might not be for everyone. They can be rugged, wild, and close to nature, but I’ve also travelled across all styles and budgets, from rustic campsites to luxury lodges with infinity pools and champagne breakfasts. Whatever kind of adventure you’re dreaming of, I’ll do my best to help you find it.
And most of all, I love answering questions about safari, any and all! Whether you’re wondering what to pack, where to go, or what animals you might spot, feel free to reach out. You can contact me at beautyinthebinos@gmail.com
